Overcrowding Issue Taken Up By Court

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has told the county to get below a state mandated 751 beds. Temporary housing and a new jail have both been discussed, but a decision isn't expected anytime soon. County Judge Becky Dempsey says whatever the decision she doesn't want taxpayers to shoulder the burden.
"I don't think there is any matter of the court that we would want to comeback to the taxpayers and ask for money for temporary housing," she said. "So that's why it was discussed today, that we have all the information before we make a specific decision on how we're going to move forward."
The court has been particularly interested in how another county, Travis County , has handled their overcrowding problem. They're hoping to look at just what they did to get into compliance and hopefully bring a representative from Travis County to East Texas in January.
