GLADEWATER, TX (KLTV) - Gladewater High School honored long time tennis coach Butch Clay Wednesday afternoon. The school tennis courts were renamed the 'Butch Clay Tennis Center.'
Clay has spent the last 39 years coaching tennis at Gladewater, winning 32 district titles, with 39 state qualifiers. The school has three state championships. Former players from the past four decades were on hand to help coach relive the glory days.
"It was like a class reunion in the 70's and all the way to last years team," said Clay. "I'm really touched that they all showed up."
Johnny Tallent won state in boys singles in 1989. He says coach Clay is one of the very best.
"Coach Clay just had a way where everybody had a good time," said Tallent. "But at the same time you respected him and loved him. You never wanted to disappoint coach Clay."
Clay is still coaching at Gladewater and says he doesn't plan on retiring any time soon.
