Kung Fu After School

When class lets out at Orr Elementary School, some kids aren't getting on the bus to go home. They're at the gym learning a martial art from China. Brandon Jones, owner of Tyler Kung Fu and Fitness, is the visiting instructor.

"They're catching on very quickly because they have such a hunger for it and they're not afraid to try things, so they'll just do it," Jones said.

Jones has about 30 students in his class, from 1st through 5th grade. One of them is his son, Jonathan, who helps his father demonstrate Kung Fu combinations.

"It gets me real flexible to jump and play basketball," Jonathan Jones said.

Aside from being a good way to stay fit, Kung Fu is much more to some of these kids.

"Kung Fu, it helps you to learn how to do bad guys," Sheldon McGowan, a 1st grader, said.

One 4th grader says she's going to take her Kung Fu lesson on a mission to protect.

"I thought it was going to be fun, and I could help my sisters out, because my baby sister, she's only 2 years old, and she likes to go out onto the streets," Mitzi Rosales said.

Fifth grader Brittany Choice says she thinks she can take down the bad guys.

Brandon Jones said, "What I really try to instill in my students is you want to be set apart from everybody else in the way you act, your attitude, your discipline, your confidence, not just because you know Kung Fu and you can do a good kick, but just you're good in your character."

Jones hopes his students will be able to focus on academics the same way he teaches them to focus on their Kung Fu training. Orr Elementary offers the Kung Fu class every Wednesday afternoon at 3 in the school gym. The school subsidizes the class so any student there can take it for just $5 for the entire year.
