UPDATE 9:33 PM - Not much is left after a raging fire demolished a mobile home around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Three departments were dispatched to the fire on Old Jacksonville Highway, between Bullard and Flint in Smith County.
"We had passed by and my little brother said, 'Stop! There's a woman coming out of the house and the house is burning up!,'" says Paula Bailey.
Bailey lives only six houses down from the property and could not believe what she saw.
"She was on a walker, barefooted; she was just by herself," Bailey says.
The elderly woman and her 21-year-old grandson lived in the mobile home together. He was preparing dinner, but left for a few minutes to run to the store.
"While he was gone, she started smelling smoke. She got up and saw smoke coming out of the kitchen real heavy, so she got out of the house," says Smith County Fire Marshal Oren Hale.
Bailey says the woman barely made it out the door before the fire engulfed her home.
"We had to go all the way to the house to get her up here. My little brother went and got the car because she needed to sit down," Bailey says.
They called 9-1-1, but by the time the fire was contained, there was nothing salvageable left in the wreckage.
The fire did spread to some woods behind the mobile home, but firefighters were able to get to it quickly by using one of the trucks already on the scene. No other structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.
