Sheriff Says He's Running Again

When you vote in the March 9 primary election, a familiar name will be on the ballot in Smith County. Seven-term Sheriff, J.B. Smith announced today he will seek an eighth consecutive term. He says the job still offers a lot of challenges and he believes, under his leadership, the department can continue to meet them. "The biggest challenge is the new jail we're going to have to have," says Smith. The sheriff says last year Smith County booked around 13-thousand people into the Smith County Jail. This year we're going to top 14-thousand.

Sheriff Smith will be challenged by another Republican. Andy Dunklin, a law enforcement veteran who now works at Mother Frances Hospital, announced his candidacy in October.
