A man suspected in the murder of another Smith County man is in custody this evening. Sheriff J.B. Smith says 20-year-old Brian Alana turned himself in to authorities this morning, after a warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday night. Earlier on Tuesday, authorities found the body of the victim, Edward Erwin, badly beaten and dumped by a pond in northeast Smith County. The sheriff's department says the alleged killer, Alana, faces murder charges and could face charges of capital murder for stealing the dead man's car.
"He does not want to talk," Smith said. "He just wants to see his lawyer. We feel OK about that. We have two witnesses that saw it. They've given us good statements. We have good physical evidence. We're ready to go to court already."
