Crews battle blaze at state park

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- Fire danger continues as a wildfire breaks out at an East Texas state park. Around 7:30 this morning, fire crews were called to Daingerfield State Park off of Highway 11 in Marion County.

"We sent 2 tractor plows out of our Pittsburg office and also some U-S Forest Service equipment, its in a state park and we were concerned about campers out here," says forest service agent Brian Pope. Almost ten acres were scorched in the park, and tell-tale smoke kept making an appearance.

"We did bring a helicopter out that was staged in Mount Pleasant," says Pope.

Firefighters weren't as concerned with the direction the fire was moving as they were where the fire was burning. All around a walking trail. There was a quick search of the trail area for park visitors.

"Got in behind walking trails so concern was somebody out there that may not know is out there," Pope says.

Fire crews caught a major break, water was actuality collected from the parks lake by the helicopter. Bulldozers cut fire breaks, and though it was contained, firefighters are worried we could see a repeat of 3 weeks ago.

"The fire threat is still high , we're still getting these cold fronts coming through with low humidity and the wind," Pope says.

No campers had to be evacuated during the fire. Forest service personnel will remain at the park for two days to make sure there are no flare-ups.
