Longview firefighter returns from marines

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV) - An emotional welcome home in Longview for a Longview firefighter who has given unselfish service as a marine in Afghanistan.

Escorted by Patriot Guard riders, Marine Sergeant David Holly arrived back home after a tour in Afghanistan.

"We've missed him so much, just his presence around the fire station; it's just awesome to see all the people today. I can't wait to see his face," says Longview firefighter Sam Turner.

The welcome at the armory did surprise the stoic Marine.

"Speechless; I didn't know what to say, overwhelmed," says Holly.

Holly's decision to serve in harm's way is what many say typical of his commitment.

"That's just him; that's what he does.  He's always been one to serve others," says mother Darla Holly.

It was back in July that Longview firefighters began wearing red jerseys in honor of Holly, and in hopes of his return.

"Serving our community, and then to go serve his country, he's just a top notch individual," says Turner.

And the welcome makes it worthwhile.

"I've contributed to a cause in history; what I believe in and stand up for, we become what we protect," David says.

Holly returns home for good and will resume his job as a Longview firefighter.
