A tree fell on a portable building at an East Texas school on Tuesday night. Tyler ISD officials suspect high winds and rain uprooted a tall oak tree at Douglas Elementary. They say no one was in either of the two classrooms in the building at the time. One teacher whose classroom was hit says her students have lost much of their class projects, computers, and other equipment. But there's one thing that is even more dear to them.
"We have a fish called Mr. Nice Guy, and it is in there, and the kids are so worried that Mr. Nice Guy is not going to be alive," said Denise Chisolm, a 5th grade bilingual teacher.
District officials say damage to the building tops $40,000. TISD says it expects to have a new building in place as early as next week. Meanwhile, about 40 students are using other classrooms on campus. On a happy note, crews were able to get the fish out and discovered it had survived.
