Thief caught in the act

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Richard Savage owns Preferred Home Medical and had stepped outside the office to make a phone call Wednesday afternoon when he saw a stranger getting out of one of his company's vans.

"I questioned him as to why he was there. He was in that van and he got out and said he was looking for a job. When I looked down into his left hand he had a GPS system in his hand that came out of that van, so I said, ‘Nah, I think you've got other reasons to be here.' So, I went to get the GPS and he pushed me in my chest," Savage says.

This man is 26-year-old Terrance Cuba, who took off running to another part of the parking lot thinking he would be able to escape, but he soon realized the only way out was to go past Savage. The two men got into a fist fight and then Cuba ran down the street.

Savage started dialing 9-1-1 while chasing Cuba down the street. When the two men finally came to a stop, Savage says Cuba became violent again.

"He picked up a big rock and threw it at my head; that missed my head. He said he was going to kill me. He picked up a big stick, swung it, hit me in this shoulder," Savage says.

While Savage was reporting what was happening over the phone to 9-1-1, Cuba began running again. Savage continued to chase Cuba.

"He picked up another rock, threw it and hit me in my thigh," Savage says.

The 9-1-1 operator advised Savage to stay put and told him the police were in route.

When the officers arrived they were able to find Cuba. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a vehicle.

EMS treated Savage on the scene for minor injuries. Savage wants to thank the Tyler Police Department for getting to the scene so quickly.
