Man drowns while mowing grass

LOWNDE COUNTY, GEORIA (WALB) - An elderly Lowndes County man drowned Tuesday. Bobby Watford, 78, who was mowing his grass about 5:00PM at his home on Hickory Grove Road, hit a log on his riding lawnmower.

The lawnmower rolled on top of him, trapping him in the water of a small pond, and he drowned.

On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, in response to a 911 call, deputies, emergency medical services personnel and Lowndes County Fire responded to 4209 Hickory Grove North where they found family members administering CPR to Bobby Carlton Watford, who was seventy eight {78} years old.

Bobby Watford had been earlier seen mowing the grass near a small pond on the property and was found submerged underneath the lawnmower.

His grandson, who made the discovery, was able to free Bobby Watford and he was pulled to shore.

Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Watford was pronounced at the scene by Lowndes County Assistant Coroner Walter Wacter.
