Kevin Lee Davis avoids jury trial

Released by Rusk County District Attorney's Office:

RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Kevin Lee Davis, 34, avoided a jury trial set for Monday, October 3 when he pleaded guilty to robbery charges and accepted a 15 year prison sentence this morning in Judge Clay Gossett's 4th District Court.  Davis was caught stealing meat at the Brookshire Brothers Grocery store and fought store employees who attempted to detain him until police could arrive.  After punching the store manager in the face, Davis escaped but was captured a short time later by officers of the Henderson Police Department.

Brookshire Brothers has seen a marked increase in meat thefts in the last few years due to the fact that stolen meat can be traded on the street for illegal drugs.

Davis has prior convictions for theft and robbery.  He received an 8 year sentence for his first robbery conviction in 1998.

First Assistant District Attorney Richard Kennedy said "Under the leadership of Mike Jimerson, this office will continue to take a hard line on criminals who commit violent acts against Rusk County citizens.  We insisted that Mr. Davis accept the 15 year offer or we were prepared to try to the case to a Rusk County jury next week.  We hope this sentence serves as notice to repeat offenders that their continued criminal conduct will not be tolerated by our office or by the citizens of Rusk County."
