ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man with at least three felony charges still pending will have to wait for his fate from prison after a judge sentenced him to 20 years behind bars on an evading arrest charge.

James Edwin Durham, 38, who has been booked into the Angelina County Jail 35 times since 1996, pleaded guilty to evading arrest earlier this year.

District Judge Paul White sentenced Durham to 20 years on Tuesday.

Durham was arrested in November 2010, just a week after being released from jail on a charge of burning his mother's house while cooking meth. According to a previous report, a deputy pulled over James Edwin Durham, 38, when he did not use a turn signal while turning onto North Timberland Drive from Loop 287.

While the deputy was letting dispatch know about the stop, he said Durham stepped out of the vehicle. Durham sat back in the vehicle after the deputy told him to. The deputy then learned Lufkin Police Department was trying to locate Durham on a suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The deputy said Durham again got out of the vehicle and said, "I haven't done anything wrong."

The deputy told Durham to get back into the vehicle, then the deputy called another deputy to the scene for backup. Durham then got out of the vehicle and began to run through an open field, the report states.

The deputy caught up to James and brought him to the ground. The deputy tried to arrest Durham, but Durham got away again and ran into a wooded area, according to the report.

Officers with the sheriff's office and LPD found Durham shortly later hiding in a garage on Forest Parks Drive.

Durham still has charges of possession of a controlled substance, arson and tampering with evidence pending in district court.

Durham has several criminal convictions on his record, including drug, theft and assault charges.
