The man recognized for his many years of effort to get the Loop 49 project underway has died. Oscar Sjerven was recently recognized for his services to Tyler and Smith County when August 7th was proclaimed "Oscar Sjerven Day" by Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber and Smith County Judge Becky Dempsey. It was the same day of the Loop 49 groundbreaking. Oscar Sjerven was also recognized for his commitment to transportation improvement projects in all of East Texas, stretching as far west as Waco. He was also president emeritus of Acme Machinery and Supply Company and involved in numerous community organizations. A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Tyler. Oscar Sjerven was 89 years old.
