NACOGCODHES, TX (KTRE) - A benefit account has been set up for a Nacogdoches Police officer injured after he was hit by another man on South Street early Monday.

Donations can be made at any BancorpSouth location. The account name is "Sgt Hawkins Benefit Fund."

Keith Hawkins suffered serious facial and pelvic injuries in the wreck.

Trooper John Henley said witnesses saw Tarcisio Chan-Ramirez, 31, of Nacogdoches, driving northbound at speeds of 90 miles per hour and even ran a red light before crashing into Hawkins.

Henley said Chan-Ramirez tried to run away, but witnesses of the crash tackled him and held him down until law enforcement officers arrived.

Chan-Ramirez is charged with intoxicated assault with a vehicle.

"They were doing a good deed," Henley said. "He's an illegal alien, and we probably never would have caught him if he got away."

Henley said authorities are trying to track down a woman who was in the car with Chan-Ramirez, who did run away from the scene.

Hawkins is listed in fair condition at a Tyler hospital.
