UPDATE: 6:00 AM: The spill on I-20 has been cleaned up and all lanes east of Hwy 31 have been re-opened.
UPDATE 9:17- HazMats have cleaned up the majority of the spill on the road and are now working on containing the chemical inside the vehicle. Authorities have just re-opened the inside lane of I-20 East.
UPDATE 9:00 PM- Around 6:45 p.m. on Monday, the driver of an 18-wheeler noticed something leaking from his truck. He stopped at the overpass just over the railroad tracks east of Hwy 31 on I-20 East.
His truck is carrying totes of diluted sulfuric acid that has now spilled across I-20 East. HazMats and the Longview Fire Department are at the scene right now. They predict the road will be closed for several hours.
Authorities have blocked I-20 East and are diverting traffic onto Hwy 31. Drivers will then take Loop 281 to Estes Parkway where they can get back on I-20 East.
One person working the scene did get the diluted sulfuric acid in his eye, but medics treated him on the scene. There are no other injuries at this time.
GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Gregg County DPS has confirmed that a tractor trailer is leaking a chemical on I-20 East over Hwy 31. A patrol car has blocked off the road and is re-routing I-20 eastbound traffic.
Authorities have no further information on the chemical, however we have a reporter in route to the scene. We will update you with more information as it becomes available.
