Study links risk of depression in women to caffeinated coffee intake
(KLTV) - A new study finds the risk of depression appears to decrease for women who increase the amount of caffeinated coffee they drink.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health say women who drink two to three cups of coffee per day have a 15 percent decrease in relative risk for depression.
Women who drank four or more cups per day decreased the risk by 20 percent.
Researchers say the results cannot prove that caffeine or caffeinated coffee reduces the risk of depression, but it may offer a protective effect.
Michael McKee, Ph.D of the Cleveland Clinic says, "Caffeine is a stimulant. It helps prevent depression. Many of the early anti-depressants were central nervous system stimulants, amphetamines. It may be that people who drink coffee are more active, exercise more, do other healthy things."
Before you start sluggin' down the coffee, check with your doctor just to make sure it may actually help you, specifically.
