FEMA agents are now in East Texas to assist victims

CASS/MARION COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - For those who have lost homes and property in this month's wildfires, a glimmer of hope has arrived.

FEMA agents are now in East Texas to assist victims.

With their homes burned, victims in Cass and Marion counties are looking to FEMA for relief.

"FEMA partners with the state and comes out and does an assessment on what kind of damages there are," explains FEMA agent Margret Broadbent, "The number one thing to do right now is register---even if you have insurance, we ask that you register. There may be things not covered by insurance that FEMA can help out with."

Effie Green's family lost three homes in the Bear Creek fire. She lost everything she owned---and had no insurance.

"We retired there. It was the neighborhood where I was born and raised," says Green, "I loved that house and I love the country. But it doesn't look the same since everything burned."

FEMA's primary mission is to assess how many victims there are, and more important, get them all to register so that they can get assistance.

"Even though they've registered with locals or the Red Cross it's still important that they register with FEMA," says Broadbent.

Putting up flyers, the teams are looking to help everyone who lost homes, particularly those who were uninsured.

"It just depends on whether FEMA helps, or we have to muddle along like we're doing," says Green.

FEMA hopes they can give hope, to those who now desperately need it.
