Gladewater welcomes home soldier

GLADEWATER,TX (KLTV) - East Texans gathered together in Gladewater to welcome home a young army Afghanistan veteran. With patriot guard and welcome home soldier members on hand at Gladewater's Calvary Baptist church, 20-year-old Army Afghanistan veteran Amanda Golden was given a big welcome home.

"I've been praying for her at church, I just wanted to say that I'm proud of her," said Amanda's nine-year-old sister Ruth Miles.

Golden was taken back by the reception.

"I didn't know it would be this was big, big flags, big hearts" Amanda says.

"There are a lot of things going on like the fires the economy that everybody's talking about but we tend to forget these kids that are over there fighting for us," says welcome home soldier member Polly Morman.

Golden has been serving in the U.S. army for two years in the chaplain corps and has been deployed to Afghanistan for 9 months.

"My sisters they're in the age where they are growing up and becoming teenagers and stuff, liking boys," Amanda says.

Many felt the need to show golden and all like her, that they're effort's are recognized.

"We really need to work at not forgetting them," says Morman.

Golden will be home for two weeks and then return to Afghanistan until December.
