Elementary students honor firefighters for their efforts

DIANA, TX (KLTV) - The roaring wildfire in Diana destroyed homes and property, and required 24-7 effort from firefighters battling it. On Friday, the community came together to show their appreciation of the men and women who gave the effort.

Residents near Diana had watched for days as fire crews battled blazes, hour after tiring hour, and on Friday at Hunt Elementary, they wanted to honor those who gave such untiring effort.

Many of the firefighters had pulled double duty rushing to several fires in Upshur County, often on an hours notice.

The kids made donations to the fireman's boot, and presented a $622 check. The day was proclaimed "Firefighter Appreciation Day."

Firefighters say it was best pay they could get.

The $622 check donation was made possible by Diana elementary schools, with each student donating two dollars.
