Tennis greats stop in Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -    Tyler is set to host 800 tennis players for the 50 & over Texas Section State Championships.

The event begins Friday and has brought perhaps the greatest brother and sister tennis duo of all time.  Tennis fans will have a chance to meet Cliff and Nancy Richey over the next two days.

They were both once ranked number one in the United States.  Nancy is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.  Cliff was once number one in the world and was a member of two American Davis Cup championship teams.

"We were both No. 1 in the United States in our respective divisions professionally," said Cliff Richey.  "She (Nancy) won 69 tour events, I won 45. Any iconic title you can think of, the Richey's own a singles for a doubles in every one of them. It's special, we're proud of it. But tennis has also given us everything that we have."

Richey is an advocate for mental health awareness.  He will be speaking about his book 'Acing Depression' Friday night at the Holiday Inn in Tyler on South Broadway.

The state tournament runs through Sunday morning.  Matches will be played at T.J.C., Tyler Tennis and Swim and Holley Tree.
