Study suggests SpongeBob causes attention and learning problems

CHICAGO (AP) - Some new research suggests that SpongeBob SquarePants and similar programs can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds. The problems were seen in a study of a small group of children randomly assigned to either watch "SpongeBob" or a slower-paced cartoon -- or to draw pictures. After those assignments, the kids were tested, and those who had watched "SpongeBob" did worse. A researcher says she found similar problems with other fast-paced cartoons. A spokesman for Nickelodeon disputes the findings -- and says "SpongeBob" is aimed at kids ages 6 to 11, not 4-year-olds.
