Firefighters battling second blaze in Cherokee Co.

Posted: Updated:

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - The big Nacogdoches County fire may have sparked a second fire in the Sacul area.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss said it appears the sparks from the Douglass area fire have blown over to the Sacul area, on the Cherokee County side and has started a 150-acre blaze.

"Things haven't gone well," Kerss said. "The winds kicked up and we lost containment on the north end of the fire."

Kerss said firefighters are back on the north side of the fire and working on a new containment line to protect the Lilbert community.

As firefighters begin to contain the wildfire in Nacogdoches County, the focus has shifted to Cherokee County, as the fire jumped over the Angelina River on Tuesday.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss said firefighters have the fire on the Nacogdoches County side contained at about 75 percent, but it is not nearly as contained on the Cherokee County side.

Kerss said the fire has burned around 4,000 acres in Nacogdoches County and about 1,000 in Cherokee County.

The fire reached State Highway 21 West Tuesday night, and flamed up on the other side of the road a few times. But firefighters were able to extinguish those flames quickly and the fire has held a line at the highway.

"It settled some during the night," Kerss said. "Of course it did that the night before too and then the winds picked up."

Kerss said two super tanker planes are due to arrive around 9 a.m. to dump fire retardant on the south side of Hwy. 21, in order to keep it from spreading to that side.
