Better East Texas: Texas A & M and the Big 12

By Pat Stacey

Well it looks like it is going to happen, rumors are flying that Texas A&M is leaving the Big 12 to go to the Southeastern Conference or should I say the school is finally leaving the rivalry with Texas.

The departure of A & M from the Big 12 will mark the end of what, for most Texans, is the best rivalry in college sports.  A &M and Texas have gone to battle in every sport and now that raw emotion and appeal will quickly become a memory.

It is wrong for A & M to leave the Big 12 and it is just as wrong for Texas to elevate itself above the rest of the conference with the new Longhorn Network.  The network will, no doubt, give Texas an edge in recruiting promising athletes.  So both schools are blowing it.

The idea of having a conference was that similar schools would face each other in competitions and that every conference member would have a chance to win.  Now that may only be a fantasy in some sports, but once a conference dissolves, rivalries and the pure excitement of why we embrace college sports are soon to follow.

Texas A &M and the University of Texas are chasing the mighty dollar and they have no regard for tradition and doing what's right.  These are bad moves for the lovers of traditions and the great rivalry that was Texas A & M and Texas.
