It took about 48 hours for the first set of pedestrian – car accidents to ring in the new school year. We have spent so much of the past year focusing on distracted drivers that we have neglected the fact that many of the accidents during the school year are as a result of distracted students. But, it is rarely the students' fault or at least the student rarely wins in a collision with a moving vehicle.
So not only are we faced with paying even more attention as drivers as school zones are active around east Texas, but parents have to corral their students to make sure that they give all the respect that is due to moving cars and trucks.
Many of these accidents can be prevented if the students behave in manner that does not temp fate or test the laws of physics. So parents, if your student walks home or is around moving traffic, teach them, no, drill it into them, that they have to obey the rules of the road as well.
The start of this school year is not very encouraging as it pertains to safety around road ways and the last time I checked on student-car encounters, the cars were winning.
Let's keep them safe and it will make for a Better East Texas.
