New London Fire

NEW LONDON, TX (KLTV) - With fires popping up all over East Texas, it is not hard to believe that another fire has consumed hundreds of acres. What was supposed to be a relaxing Labor Day weekend , now has homeowners watching their property as firefighters try to contain the blaze that is headed right for their homes.

The fire broke out around 9 a.m. Sunday, right down the street from Casie Riddle's home. Family, friends and neighbors gathered on her property today all hoping for the same thing, that the fire does not come any closer to their homes.

"We've evacuated four to five roads off of County Road 133 and we've evacuated an area within the city limits of New London and that is the Turner Camp area," Fire Chief Curtis Riley says.

"My grandparents, my aunts and uncles live on this same road. So they have all evacuated and we've been hanging out around here just hoping for some good news," Riddle says.

An officer came to Riddle's home and told her to gather her belongings just in case she is forced to leave. But what she packed are not just memories from the past, but plans for her future. Her wedding is scheduled for next weekend.

"We're getting married Saturday, so I got all of our wedding stuff out, just pictures the irreplaceable things, the important things we got out," Riddle says.

But Riddle says she is not going to let this fire stand in her way.

"The wedding is still on for sure, house or no house," Riddle says.

As of 10 p.m. Monday evening, authorities say the fire is about 75 percent contained. The flames destroyed about 300 acres. Several homes were evacuated, but no injuries have been reported.
