Upshur Co. blaze 80% contained

UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Around noon on Friday, a wildfire was reported in a heavily wooded area of Upshur County, off Grouse Road, between Goldfinch and Kingfisher.

Crews quickly got a perimeter on the blaze, which was fueled by high winds.

Texas Forestry Service bulldozers were again used, and a helicopter air dropping water.

Homeowners were advised that they may have to evacuate, but because of quick work by crews, that never developed.

Every available resource, like many recent fires, were used to battle the blaze.

Fortunately, the fire has bypassed homes in the area without doing damage.

Johnny Taylor of the Gilmer Fire Department says six to eight acres in heavy timber burned. Taylor also says in his 38 years in fire service, this is by far the worst fire season.

Three departments worked the fire.

The blaze is 80% contained at this time.

The cause is still under investigation.
