NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Firefighters from Nacogdoches and Lufkin left Thursday morning to assist with fighting a fire in Palo Pinto County in North Texas.

The firefighters are on the way there as part of the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System, an agreement between federal and state agencies to better contain wildfires.

The Nacogdoches team consists of Battalion Chief Frankie Hamby, Fire Marshal Del Birdwell, Capt. Myrick Richard and Engineer Dusty Arreguin. Capt. Bill Wafer and Joe Burton are from Lufkin.

Firefighters from Galveston and Georgetown are also part of this East Texas Strike Team.

The team reported to Mineral Wells at 8 a.m. and are assigned to the 101 Ranch Fire in Palo Pinto County, according to Nacogdoches Fire Chief Keith Kiplinger.

The fire has burned about 6,200 acres and destroyed 39 homes, according to ABC News. It is still threatening about 160 more homes.
