Smith County Courthouse first in Texas to read "In God We Trust"
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - In Smith County Commissioner's court meeting Tuesday morning, something new adorned the walls.
Four words, "In God We Trust."
Last month commissioners voted to place the motto in their courtroom.
It now sits right above the Smith County seal.
A group called "In God We Trust America" is paying for the motto to be displayed in public places across the country.
It's something Judge Joel Baker says they're very pleased to display in their courtroom.
"We had to go through some legal channels to make sure it covered every base. We know that there may be some challengers, we've already heard some criticism but it's something that, as I said, this nation was founded on, we believe in it and supported it and we're glad it's here," says Baker.
Commissioners say Smith County is the first county in the state to display "In God We Trust" in a courtroom.
