Doctor says new options will help bladder control patients

LUFKIN, TX (KLTV) - Lufkin family practice physician Rima Kittley describes a condition more common than you may think.

"It's a very private issue," Kittley said. "It's very personal. They are reluctant to come talk to anybody. As a female physician they're more likely to talk to me about it."

According to the U.S. Health Department, millions of women suffer from some type of incontinence.

"You don't want to go anywhere," Kittley said. "You don't want to do anything. It's very embarrassing."

The FDA just approved a unique treatment for incontinent patients with neurological conditions.

Known as a miracle for keeping wrinkles at bay, Botox is now being injected into bladders to help control the muscles.

For women, Kittley says child birth is a main cause.

"There's a lot of issues by squeezing out a big head out of a small hole," Kittley said.

Extra weight also puts extra pressure on your bladder.

"The pelvic floor exercises do help," Kittley said. "Every time you sit down contract the muscle in the whole pelvic floor, does help for early signs.

However, more treatment is usually needed for women who get sudden bladder spasms.

Many hope the FDA's decision will soon be studied and approved for all patients suffering from bladder control problems.

For the women who have to come to the store and buy incontinence products, shopping becomes an embarrassing ordeal. Kittley says the promise of new and better treatments is very exciting for these patients.

"Having more treatments is a good idea," Kittley said. "You don't need to be stuck at home worrying about someone else will think. You need to get treated."

Kittley says telling your doctor is the first step.

"The ones who come back with their problem solved, whether its a medicine or surgery, come back and say I've got my life back," Kittley said.
