Hawkins hosts fundraiser for child cancer patient

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- In spite of hard economic times, a small East Texas community came together to help a family who's little boy is stricken with leukemia, with whatever they could give. From a classic car show to selling tee-shirts to a silent auction, it was an effort by the people of the small town of Hawkins to help 5 year old leukemia patient Jayden Prestridge and his family offset medical bills.

"When Jayden was diagnosed I was, devastated he is my best friend we do everything together , riding 4 wheelers we do everything together, really scared I was going to lose him," says Jayden's father Jeremy.

There are around 13-hundred people in Hawkins. Many struggling themselves. Yet they gave everything they could.

"You realize that the problems that you have aren't near as bad when you see something like this kind of puts it all in perspective, people give what they got you know, it may not be much but every little bit helps you know it all adds up," says event organizer Ricky Dacus.

"The town pulled together, you figure no one would have any money but everybody's doing all they can, there's cars here its just a really good feeling," Jeremy says.

The good news is, after treatment at Dallas children's hospital, Jayden is in remission, but he'll have to endure more treatments, and more medical bills.

"He has to have treatment for 3 years," Jeremy says.

"Its so nice to see how a town can really support a family in need especially when their child has leukemia like Jayden," says grandmother Ruth Correia.

"I want to thank everyone for everything they've done for us," says Jeremy.

If you would like to help, you can make donations to 'Jayden's journey tragedy fund', at any local C-N-B bank.
