15 acres burns in Liberty City fire

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A big brush fire threatened homes and torched around 15 acres in Gregg County Saturday evening. It happened just before 5 p-m, just southwest of Liberty City, between I-20 and West Point Road. 9-1-1 calls brought several fire departments out to try to contain the blaze which was moving quickly towards several homes in the area. Crews quickly worked to make a perimeter around the fire and stop it from getting to homes. But for some it was too close.

"We pulled some clothes out and put them in the car and it was a little panic but then we calmed down and started praying," says homeowner Ricky Lawson.

"It started right here at the interstate burned up the hill got up against some houses, so the initial effort had to be to save the houses," says Gregg County Fire Marshal David Kidder.

The fire was contained, and Texas Forestry Service bulldozers were called in. No homes were damaged. The cause remains under investigation.
