New code helps heart attack victims

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - It's a new way to treat heart attack patients...before they arrive at the hospital.

Before "Code Stemi" went into use at Mother Frances Hospital...getting a heart attack patient from the door to surgery took about an hour and a half. But Code Stemi reduced that time to an hour. The half hour saved increases a patient's chance of survival.

Paramedics can actually perform an electric cardiogram in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The EKG is sent to the hospital through the Internet before the patient actually arrives.

The emergency staff can use the extra time to prepare for heart surgery and better assess the patients condition.
