Jury Gives Deputy's Shooter Life

A man who shot a Smith County Deputy while trying to escape has been sentenced to life in prison.

James Edward Jones plead guilty to the aggravated assault of a peace officer Monday in court. Last March, Jones shot Smith County Deputy Carolyn Hudson in Downtown Tyler during a transfer from UT Health Center.

Tuesday, a jury sentenced Jones to life in prison. That was stacked on top of a previous 2 year sentence for Theft in Gregg County. Jones will now be eligible for parole in 31 and a half years.
