A Lufkin man has pleaded guilty in the drunk driving death of a Corrigan teacher, accepting an 18-year prison sentence.
Leobardo Nieves, 21, also accepted a 10-year prison sentence for intoxication assault in District Judge Barry Byan's court for injuring the daughter of Connie McKay, 45, the teacher Nieves killed.
The sentences will be run concurrently.
District Attorney Clyde Herrington credited Lufkin Police with handing over a case which forced Nieves to plead to a long prison sentence.
"There was a tremendously outstanding investigation with the Lufkin Police Department," Herrington said. "There were a number of officers that really did a great job. They did everything I asked them to do."
Lufkin Police arrested Nieves in January after a traffic wreck on the intersection of the loop and Lotus Lane Avenue, which claimed the life of McKay.
