A second piece of artillery has turned up on the grounds of Camp Fannin in the last week, except this one was "live," meaning the shell never went off. A homeowner in Owentown found the mortar shell while he was clearing out his backyard. Smith County authorities today called military personnel from Fort Hood to dispose of the ammunition. Constable Charles Wilson says they didn't want anyone to come in contact with the old shell and get hurt. Wilson says the mortar shell is at least 60 years old. He says if someone were to trigger the shell, it could cause serious injury.
If you find anything that looks like old army artillery, you're asked to call local authorities, the Sheriff's Dept., or the Constable's office.
