Both teens freed after being stuck in ravine

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Two Tyler teens are freed after finding themselves stuck in a ravine Wednesday night.

An evening adventure turned into something much more serious within minutes for two thirteen-year-olds. Drew Carpenter and Ken Wheeler were exploring what firefighters are calling a 25-foot ravine when they realized they were unable to get out. Fortunately, Wheeler had his cell phone and was able to call for help.

Randy Lee, firefighter and lead rope technician, said he received a call around 9 p.m. saying two young teenagers were trapped in a ravine in the 3800 block of Brighten Creek Circle in the Woods subdivision. Firefighters called in their lead rope rescue group and were able to lower a rescuer down to the boys. Carpenter and Wheeler were then harnessed and pulled up mechanically within 30 to 40 minutes.

Lee says everyone is very fortunate to walk away with no injuries. Both Carpenter and Wheeler want to thank everyone who assisted in their rescue and say they plan on admiring that ravine from a distance from now on.
