Highway worker in E. Texas struck, killed

UPDATE:  The highway worker who was killed has been identified as Michael Allen Lorie, 24, of Jasper.  He was pronounced dead at 8:15a.m.

The driver of the car has been identified by DPS as Danielle Lee Williams.  She was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer northbound on FM 105 at the Westico Mall entrance. At around 8:04 she swerved to avoid hitting a stopped car in front of her, causing her to hit Lorie, who was on the road's shoulder flagging traffic.

EVADALE, Texas (AP) - Investigators say a highway construction worker in Southeast Texas has died after being struck by a vehicle.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office says the driver stopped following the accident Wednesday morning on Farm-to-Market Road 105 south of Evadale.

KFDM-TV reports witnesses say the victim had been holding a stop sign when he was hit by the passing motorist. The victim's name has not been released.

Further details were not immediately available.
