UPDATE: Electrical problem at oil well sparked massive grass fire

UPDATE Wednesday: The Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal, Connie Wasson, says the massive grass fire was started by an electrical problem with a pump jack at a nearby oil well. The Texas Forest Service completed their fly-over of the land and say 250 acres were burned.

UPDATE, 7:30 P.M: The fire has been contained. Two homes were destroyed in the blaze. Residents evacuated earlier in the day will be allowed to return home tonight.

UPDATE: Officials now tell us the fire has scorched at least 285 acres, and is still not contained.

UPDATE: C. R. 2305, 235 and 26 are closed. According to Smith County authorities, the fire is contained, but not out. Those who have been evacuated are finding shelter at CME church on CR 26. The Salvation Army and The Red Cross are there providing rehab and sandwiches. There are approximately 25 fire units at the scene along with two EMC ambulances and a Resident Liaison Officer from DPS.

UPDATE: The Red Cross and The Salvation Army are on their way to the scene to assist firefighters and residents with water and other needs.  

An evacuation order has been given for the area surrounding CR 235 and CR 26. Law enforcement is approaching the scene to begin the evacuation process. All traffic on both CR 235 and CR 26 has been blocked in both directions.

Two helicopters and a plane are working the fire.

According to Adrienne Graham, PR liaison/Executive Assistant, Smith County Commissioners Court,  multiple fire departments are battling this large, un contained fire that has destroyed structures and vehicles at 18545 CR 26, which is South of Hwy 31 and two miles east of CR 21 according to the Smith County Fire Marshall's Office.

The fire has crossed CR 235 and is moving east. More fire crews and aerial relief are en route.

40-50 ACRES are burning as of this update, and 10-15 homes are threatened.  

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Numerous volunteer fire departments are fighting a major grass fire on County Road 235 near County Road 233 in Smith County.

At least three structures have been consumed and homes on County Road 235 are being evacuated at this time.

Air support has been called in and is on the way.
