E. Texas implements new concussion screening for students

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The injury of "concussion" continues to be a major concern in extreme contact sports like hockey and football, But it is not just athletes who can suffer the long term effects of it.

Pine Tree ISD has become the first East Texas school to implement concussion screening for its athletes and administrators, through a program called Impact.

The program utilizes a computer based memory test using word games and shapes to measure neurocognitive functions, and educates possible victims of signs , symptoms and dangers of post-concussion.

Even a thought minor injury could lead to long term brain damage, or even death. And the screening could save someone's life, on or off the field.

Pine Tree ISD staff will undergo the testing on Monday. "Impact" is currently used by college and pro football, and the NHL, and since the program began , they have tested over 2500 student athletes throughout East Texas.
