Corporate spelling bee challenge: Which company wins?

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - One lucky local business holds a first place trophy after competing in the Literacy Council's Twentieth Annual Corporate Spelling Bee contest.

After competing against 15 other teams of three, the Tyler Junior College spelling team took home first place for the second year in a row.

"We studied for hours and hours and we have a friend that does pronunciations, and we just practice," says the TJC spelling team.

The spelling bee challenge is hosted by the Literacy Council of Tyler, all the money earned goes towards helping adults get a better education, and learn English.

The Literacy Council Community Relations Coordinator, Hallye Terrell says, "Making $50,000 at one event, really does make a big impact, and helps us to serve more of the community."

The event also raises money by including a raffle drawing, and an online auction.

"It costs us $500, per student per year, to provide the services, which are free to the student," says Terrell.

Even though the event consists of a competition, it is all in good fun and a little humor.

"They're not just writing a check, they're coming and having fun, and getting crazy and dressing in costumes," says Terrell.

Mentoring Minds and TJC stood as the final two teams, and after a long battle, TJC took first place after spelling: Adobo.
