When Ronnie Walker was put in charge of his company's fire base in Vietnam, he thought he was finally out of danger after months of combat. However during a routine walk to the base's generator shed, he stepped on an undiscovered mine, which blew off his left leg and badly mangled his right leg. Walker's race with death became even more harrowing when his unsecured stretcher almost slipped out the open door of the helicopter during his flight to the hospital.
At the hospital, the attending doctor wanted to remove the badly damaged right leg but Walker refused. After multiple surgeries, months in casts, and years of practice and determination, Ronnie Walker now walks with only a slight limp, something he was told he would never do.
