Little girl dies after being shot in back with stray bullet

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - A little girl died Wednesday evening, hours after she was shot in the back by a bullet intended for someone else.

Carmella Holley was watching television in a second floor apartment of the Hillwood Homes in the 1100 block of Key Place when gunfire erupted outside in the parking lot.

Akron Police say the 11-year old was hit by a stray bullet when at least five bullets hit the apartment building around 4:20PM.

"Next thing you know, everybody was running and Carmella was saying, "my back, my back," said the victim's sister, Natasha Taylor. "We was just sitting there watching TV and eating candy, and somebody shot her."

Carmella was rushed to Akron Children's Hospital by EMS in serious and then critical condition. She later died.

The suspects are on the loose.

"We plan on moving," said neighbor Traleesha Varner. "Shouldn't nobody feel safe. It could have been anybody's kids, there was a whole bunch of kids outside."

The Akron Mayor issued the following statement:

The senseless killing of an 11-year-old at Hillwood Homes last night affects us all. I want to express my condolences to the family of Carmella Holley. This gun violence is reckless and criminal, and the Akron Police Department is doing everything they can to find those responsible and bring them to justice. It is important for the residents of the area to cooperate with police, to share information, and to assist law enforcement as they work to apprehend the killer.
