Released by The Rusk County Sheriff's Office:

On July 27, 2011, at approximately 9:20pm, Rusk County K-9 Deputy, Jason Smith, made a traffic stop on US Highway 59 North, in Rusk County.

During the context of the traffic stop Deputy Smith noticed numerous signs from the driver, Suspect Dwaune R. Riggins, 33, of Springfield, Ohio, indicative of criminal activity.  Deputy Smith requested consent to search the vehicle, the suspect denied consent to search.

Due to the denial Deputy Smith deployed his narcotics dog, Caro, to do a scan of the vehicle and Caro alerted to the vehicle.  A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted by Deputy Smith.

During the search, a bottle was located in the passenger compartment of the vehicle containing codeine and a large amount of cash, totaling approximately $14,700. The suspect was arrested and charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, a third degree felony, and Money Laundering, a state jail felony.

On July 28, 2011, Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5, Judge Joe Sorrells charged the suspect with Possession of Controlled Substance, bond set at $10,000, and Money Laundering, bond set at $20,000.

The suspect was released on bond on July 28, 2011.

Sheriff Danny R. Pirtle stated this seize was due to the professional training and observation by Deputy Smith and Caro.  I commend both for a job well done.  Rusk County Sheriff's Office will continue to do the best we can to keep drug trafficking off the streets of Rusk County.
