Listing on Craigslist lands man behind bars

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A listing on helped authorities locate a man accused of stealing a bicycle in Wilmington.

Andre Duque, the owner of the stolen bike, spotted the ad on Craigslist for $800 and called the Wilmington Police Department to alert them to the crime.  Duque said the bike, a Kuota K Factor, is worth about $2,500.

"It was just a shock to see they actually posted it," explained Duque.  "It was heartbreaking they didn't realize what they had.  They could have gotten a lot more for it."

Police arranged to "buy" the stolen bike from Mark Anderson Oakes, who made the post on Craigslist.  When officers showed up to make they purchase they discovered Oakes had a BMW that was reported stolen out of Charlotte.

Officers arrested Oakes, who is now in the New Hanover County Jail under a $100,000 bond.

Duque said there are only four other Kuota K-Factor bikes in Wilmington and he knows all of their owners.  He was fairly confident that his bike would have eventually been located.
