TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Jamal Joseph Freeman, 19, was shot and killed Monday morning after allegedly stabbing two Kilgore police officers.
Kilgore Police say 47-year-old DeeAnn Brown and 54-year-old Corporal David Tuckers were responding to an alleged kidnapping in the 1200 block of E. North Street when they came across Freeman in the driveway of a residence. Kilgore police say Freeman began stabbing the officers with a knife until one of the officers shot and killed him.
Kilgore police say both officers suffered non-life threatening wounds and were transported to a Longview Hospital.
Freeman's family members tell KLTV 7 that he suffered from mental retardation and did not have a history of violence. Deontre Williams, Freeman's cousin, says Jamal kept to himself, "He was a good kid. He had issues, but we all have issues."
The Kilgore Police Department says there is no evidence or reports that a kidnapping ever took place. Captain Roman Roberson of the Kilgore Police Department says the investigation is currently being conduced by the Texas Rangers with assistance by the Gregg County Sheriff's Office.
Officer Brown was released from the hospital on Monday night. Corporal David Tucker was released Tuesday night.
