KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Two Kilgore Police Officers were assaulted this morning after responding to a call of a reported kidnapping.

According to Kilgore PD PIO, Captain Roman Roberson,  the call came in around 7:48 from the 1200 block of E. North Street in Kilgore, behind the Whataburger. Officer DeeAnn Brown, 47, met a subject in the driveway of a residence. At that time, the subject attacked officer Brown with a knife. Sgt. David Tucker, 54, attempted to intervene and was also attacked and stabbed.

One of the officers shot and killed the subject.

Emma Freeman Benson, the great aunt of the alleged suspect, tells KLTV 7 that Jamal Joseph Freeman, 19, was shot and killed by officers. She tells us that Jamal had a mental disability.

Roberson confirms that Freeman was known to some officers to be mentally unstable and the department did have some contact with Freeman in the past.

Both officers were transported to a Longview hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They are listed in stable condition at this time.

There was not a kidnapping. The investigation is being conducted by the Texas Rangers with assistance by the Gregg County Sheriff's office.
