UPDATE: The 21-year-old female driver has been identified by DPS as Ivana A. French. At this time we do not know her condition.
GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - 1 person has been killed and at least 4 others injured in a head on collision in Gregg County on Highway 31 near FM 2767 near the Smith County line.
According to DPS Trooper Jeanne Dark, a 21-year-old female was driving towards Tyler on Highway 31 and did not notice an SUV stopped in traffic waiting to turn. The 21-year-old swerved to avoid the SUV, clipped the back of it and went into oncoming traffic.
78 year old J.W. Garrett of Longview was driving on 31 the other way, and the 21-year-old hit his car. 3 other people were in the car: his wife, a 10-year-old child and Garrett's best friend. Garrett was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, friend and the child have been taken to the hospital. We're told his wife is in emergency surgery. So far, no word on the extent of their injuries.
The 21-year-old female driver, who has not been identified yet, was taken to a hospital in Tyler, and she is also in emergency surgery. DPS says they are considering filing charges against her, potentially a criminally negligent homicide charge.
No word on how many people were in the SUV or if they were injured.
