Down syndrome man victim of hit and run

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A hit and run driver is still loose, nearly a week after hitting an East Texas man with Down Syndrome. Authorities in Liberty City say 31-year old Brian Scott Carr was hit Friday at the intersection of Rice road and Debbie street. Brian is now in critical condition.

Brian was on the phone with his mother as he was walking with his bike along the road around 5 p-m Friday.

"I was talking with him and then we got cut off," says Brian's mother, Jean Carr.

Soon people were helping Brian as an ambulance arrived.

"When I first got there the young man apparently had be hit by a vehicle that apparently didn't stop," says family friend Steve Fite.

"At first I thought it was a minor accident. I didn't think it was bad until I saw the ambulance arrive, Brian actually explained he got hit by a white van, he said it several times before he got into the ambulance , he got hit by a white van," Jean says.

Brian had 6 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He currently needs a ventilator to breathe.

"And the worst part was no one stopped to render aid why someone would do that none of us could understand," Fite says.

Brian often road his bike around town, frequently going to Foodland supermarket, where he did odd jobs.

"We get calls on him all day long checking on him seeing how he's doing," says Fite.

And the search now is for a the white van that sped away. Brian's family is asking that anyone who may have seen the white van, possibly with a damaged right passenger side, please notify police.
