Authorities nab church A/C thief

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Smith County Sheriff's Department arrested the suspect in a string of church A/C unit thefts.

Bryson Jamar Anthony, 25, was arrested and charged with burglary of a building for allegedly stealing aluminum coils and copper wire out of air conditioners at 13 Smith County churches.

"When we started talking to him and interrogating him he eventually confessed to the fact that he had burglarized 13 of our churches here in Smith County," said Sheriff J.B. Smith, Smith County.

Smith County authorities also believe he has hit churches in other counties around East Texas.

Anthony was caught at the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. An employee saw him stealing bronze plates from a storage shed and called authorities.

"So I walked around the shop to see what was happening and the guy was outside the shop in the northwest corner, and when he saw me he tried to run through the woods and I asked him to stop and he stopped," said Adur Mustaffa, caught burglar in the act.

At the time of his arrest he had marijuana and Xanax on him. He has also been charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.

He was booked into the Smith County Jail with bonds totaling $390,500. Additional charges are possible.

The Sheriff's Department said last month that arresting this suspect was one of the highest priorities for the department.
